The games are meh but the actual setting, lore, characters and plot are top tier.
USUM isn't quite as good in those categories, but it's still eons better than Gen 5 and 6.

Oh come on, the cutscenes in SuMo weren't that bad. At least those games were filled to the brim with content, unlike XY and SwSh. Or ScVi where you have to fucking choose whether you want to fight the gyms or the evil team and have to start a new game or buy an extra copy of the game if you want to do both.

S/M were absolutely better than SwSh. I don't know why that'd even be a question. SwSh is the worst mainline Pokemon game they've ever put out and is basically where the series turned to irredeemable shit.
