how do i into leveling curve? i'm trying to make a difficulty hack for colosseum but it keeps feeling like i overlevel way too quickly
i also want to make evolution stones accessible through thief (since the game is about stealing) and not cop out by having them on a vendor. the issue with this is i don't know how to convey to the player which trainer has stones without outright giving them away or putting them in the battle square in pyrite town since it's so early

With lots of playtesting I guess. If increasing the levels doesn't prevent overlevelling due to the player gaining more exp from higher level Pokemon, you can reduce the amount of exp the player gets. You can also try to increase difficulty in other ways than just increasing levels like giving trainers better Pokemon, IVs, EVs, better moves, held items and better AI.

Pro tip: The Level Curve is inherently bad game design because if you don't feel your power relative to your enemies change over time the only sense of progression comes from all the content you're power-crept out of ever, ever having any reason to revisit.
Lower your level cap to 50 and have players and enemy trainers hit it soon.
The levels only go up to trick the brain into thinking there is escalating difficulty where there isn't really any but should be.

I removed Sound from the chart. Rock is "Earth", Earth combines Ground and Rock into one type.

They're trying to change the topic of discussion because they're dishonest cowards.
Whether levels add value to the videogame isn't the topic of discussion.
The fact is this: Forcing the player to waste time grinding their levels up to match the foe's levels is inconsiderate to the player's valuable time.
If you don't know enough about Pokemon to make something harder without just increasing its levels relative to the player's levels, you shouldn't make romhacks or fangames.
Not until you've learned more about Pokemon than the average small child.
Hell, even Alola's Totem Pokemon knew to boost the stats of Totem Pokemon instead of their Levels.
Learn what held items and good abilities do. Learn how to make better teams. Hell, just give the Gyms that are supposed to be hard permanent weather conditions!
There are ways to make the game more interesting challenge. Pumping up numbers I can grind to or hack to isn't "challenge", it's an admission of defeat. You're literally admitting Pokemon to you is just grinding, and you think Pokemon should just be grinding to everyone else.
The pugs probably don't have the attention span to read all of that. So for everyone who does: This is another reason why not all criticism is valuable, not all anonymous internet people know what they're talking about, and not all voices are worth listening to.

You're literally proving my point for me right now, brainlet.
When you "Balance a level curve" to have as little impact on the game as possible, you admit the game is better off without levels putting a gap in power between you and your foes.
So lower the level cap.
Let players hit that level cap quick so the game's developer is forced to think when putting challenges of increasing difficulty in the game, and the player is forced to think when overcoming those challenges.
Me human man with life and wife. Me no have time to waste grinding in korean MMORPGs or Pokemon or anything else.
Reducing the tiresome obnoxious 0IQ grind is a big part of making your game accessible and appealing to potential players.

Dunno if this would go here or if this would even be a proper place to ask this, but does anyone know how the IR carts (HGSS/BW/B2W2) work with Twilight Menu? For example, if I have HeartGold in my cartridge slot and am running SoulSilver on my DSi/3DS with Twilight Menu, can I then use the Pokewalker with SoulSilver by using the HeartGold cart?

I ask because I always wanted to do custom Pokewalker routes for a HGSS romhack, but it would be completely pointless without some way to actually access the Pokewalker.

As >>51505074 said its mostly playtesting. Generally you want to avoid unnecessary level bloat. Over any decently long area you'll probably want to increase enemy levels by about 3 or 4 with maybe an extra 1 or 2 tacked on for the boss. For shorter areas you don't need to go up as much.
The base game of Colosseum itself is fine enough to study for a level curve besides the final realgam tower fights and postgame. If you're adding more Pokemon to trainers, bump levels up sparingly.

A few tips then: make it so there are moves capable of stealing stuff, give more Pokemon the option to learn said moves.
Personally, how I'd do it is give the stones to stone evos enemy trainers use, and have an NPC say "make sure to steal often from trainers, also you can steal X, Y and Z if you fight certain Pokemon". I would also then place an evo stone vendor in postgame somewhere so the player isn't just locked out of them entirely if they missed them

IV/EVs are usually more of an issue in "difficulty" romhacks than grinding and even then since many of the movesets are just blindly copying competitive sets, it's just a matter of adapting your strategy or building a well rounded team.

Based on how FE works I'd assume it's because you're too high level compared to the Pokemon you're fighting, exp scales with level. Alternatively, if the level cap for base stages is 20, you might need to promote.

So I've tried it, it's a dumb binary hack of Gold, which is already enough for anyone to ignore it completely. Just to clarify the scale of tragedy:
You live on the second floor of a Pokemon Center in Goldenrod and your Mom is a nurse there. There's also dad and several siblings. For some reason Bill also lives there with you all (kek) and he gives you an Eevee before you even had a conversation with professor and picked a starter. Despite the starting town being Goldenrod, you still have to get to Elm's lab in New Bark Town via a teleport to get your second Pokemon and receive a quest to bring back an Egg from Oak (yes, map events are completely the same, even Silver staring in the window outside the lab). Author's idea of urbanization is taken literally: all routes are filled with inaccessible buildings and walking NPCs. Some NPC on route 46 gives you a lvl 15 Shuckle. There's a PC in every building, which is futuristic according to the author. Despite this, there's not a single custom tile anywhere, all maps use default tileset and in fact are just slightly edited versions of default maps. All NPCs have new text but it's extremely dumb, as if a 15 year old wrote it.

Binary hacking is an obsolete pipeline that puts a lot of limitations, but even in 00s when there were no alternatives yet I think I've played better stuff than this hack.

man fuck difficulty hacks in general but double fuck ones that think it's "difficulty" to make pokemon catches less likely and money scarcer.
If it's guaranteed that I could RNG grind to get what I need eventually, hacking just saves me time and money.

I frankly dont see whats wrong with this, well mainly the points about starting in golden and having to go to new bark town, Lore wise it makes sense in a story for a city kid to travel to bumffuck nowhere to meet a super important person and do the quest, the mapping though, im gonnah ave to see it but otherwise I like the idea could be polished alot though.

I think he's been working on this hack off-and-on since 2010 or something. There are other versions called New Gold 2012 and 2018 which I think are him just updating the same thing and not starting over with the decomp.

It's a pret decomp, there's documentation and stuff on his github. It's kind of complicated to learn, but it'll save you so much fucking time over those godawful tools that don't have any documentation and ruin your game half the time. Important things to get too are poryscript and porymap, essentially mandatory. IDK if there any rombases that add modern features for pokeruby, you could check on pokecommunity.

Nigga there's not even been any 'gen 4 games' yet that aren't just difficulty hack nonsense. The games that have been touted as actually original have been in devhell for the last 4 years. People have been sucking off DS hacking for 2 years straight now for making 'advancements' and there has been nothing to show except graphics that get uploaded to r/pokemonromhacks or twitter so the normies can updoot it.
If anything BBVW2 adding a few new events/maps is more than anything gen 4 shit has done. It's also basically the biggest amount of creative content that's been made for a DS hack period.

On this topic I'm a maintaining the same amount of Pokémon, Abilities, Moves, & Items in mine jus so it stays compatible with 3rd party software like PKHex & is still recognized as an Emerald ROM. As long as I provide the index number for each of these things there shouldn't be any need for gamesharks or other types of codes that manipulate Pokémon in-game. It depends on how it's handled, like it happens with a lot of other things such as wild Pokémon distribution or TMs.
When it comes to wild Pokémon, you make sure to use Pokémon that don't give too much experience and/or that are low leveled so the Player won't be able to overlevel their Pokémon.
In the case of TMs, you avoid putting nothing but broken moves in the TMs and you put thought into the seelction of TMs the Player will be capable of getting throughout their journey.
A system that lets you buy abilities should be handled no differently; don't let the Player purchase any retardedly strong ability unless you want them to steamroll through your game, and it can work out.

I'm keeping HMs & TMS will be single-use.
They're all mostly the same as RSE, however I'm updating the stats to match newer generations, and replacing Strength with Bulldoze. It will still function essentially the same in the overworld as Strength, but in-battle it will function the same as Bulldoze in other games, reducing the sped stat by 1 stage. Additionally, Flash is now a Fairy-Type 60 Base Power Special Attack that reduces the opponent's accuracy by 1 stage as per usual. I hope that makes up for the locked move slot.

Enginewarring is a consequence of all the losers who dismiss Essentials fangames for not playing on their 20 year old handheld devices, overpriced chinese ripoffs of 20 year old handheld devices, or phones.
Getting Doom running on the GBA is an achievement, even though it's inferior to the modern PC version and harder to modify.
The same is true of Pokemon.
Getting it running on original hardware is a cute gimmick not worth all the things you can only do in Essentials, and all the things that are far easier to implement in Essentials.
You will never see orchestral soundtracks in a GBA game.

People have the right to choose to not play your game. It doesn't matter whether they do it because it doesn't run on their devices, or because they simply don't want to play it. No one is obligated to play your game.

I think the bigger issue is early game rather than late game, money tends to be tighter early game. I'd recommend making it free until the first badge or something, making that part of the scaling. But additionally; PP is another factor to consider; even if you never take damage you'll eventually have to pay to recover your PP unless Ethers and Elixirs are abundant. So there's not really much room for skill to matter outside of some really autistic resource management. But it sounds like you'd just be making Pickup and Pay Day far more important than anything.

You can look through pokecommunity to find various patches, but practically every patch is made for the vanilla rom so there's no guarantees that any of them work with existing hacks.

Also make gym leaders lock you in same nmber of pokemons (if say, gym leader 1 has 3 pokemon then you need to pick 3 from your team to fight, etc)

Star is great. Its a shame there havent been many Gen 7 hacks like it. I was working on one for a while and even managed to change around some cutscenes, but the linearity of the game and the fact that almost every fucking trainer is optional in the game forced me to give up
