Why didn't Gold appear in any games where he wasn't the Protagonist?

Red was grandfathered in because Gen 1 had no option for a female trainer. The other gens have gender options, so they don't want to "canonize" one over the other.

The real answer is that Gen 1 and 2 are linked. No other gens are linked so there's no reason for the previous protagonist to show up. BW2 was their first real opportunity since Gen 1 to insert the previous MC as a character and they chickened out.
