I think people generally assume that they would both be Cynthia's direct ancestors but I didn't get that kind of vibe from their interactions (plus Volo seems too hell-bent on his arceus hunt after you beat him, I doubt he was gonna settle down and raise a family after declaring a thousand-year revenge quest)
Plus Cogita is clearly meant to be older and the appearence connection is already there, so I feel like Cogita is Cynthia's true direct ancestor and Volo is related to Cogita already, perhaps as a great grand-child or grand-nephew, assuming Cogita is some kind of ageless/long-living human as she implies with the dialogue about Enamorus.
