Absolutely, especially when the starters leaked in the first place.
The thing is, it's not even an opinion thing, fucking everybody, even outside /vp/was making fake leaks with Decidueye and using Pokken as "Proof" that he "won".
But now, when it wasn't Decidueye, Incineroar was "Obvious"? What?
I get people were mad especially with the Grinch Leak boogaloo but holy shit. The combination of Pokemon and Smash cancer really fucked things up

Definitely better now for sure.

Being a shillmon doesn't mean it's popular, it just means that's the Pokemon TPC is hedging their bets on. It's not unheard of for a Pokemon to be shilled and still fall by the wayside, like Zoroark
And it's blatantly clear Incineroar was their pick for how much it was pushed even if it didn't work out, at least if those online polls are anything to go by.
You know a gen 7 shillmon that did become popular? Mimikyu.

My main issue is where the fuck did "Obvious" come from? People's entire reasoning to make Decidueye popular was showing proof that it beat Incineroar, but now, because leakers said Incineroar, they are turning the phrase around to say that Incineroar is the "Obvious" pick?

Sakurai probably was more interested in Decidueye but The Pokemon Company were probably insistent on him following the starter they hedge their bets on and coaxed him into deciding Incineroar.

Incineroar being more humanlike and simpler to animate was also probably a boon, as Sakurai prefers those attributes in a Pokemon, as well as the factors already officially mentioned.

I sincerely doubt Sakurai just happened to be more interested in the Pokemon they wanted to shill twice, especially here where he changed his mind

Incineroar might be cancer in VGC, but he's really fun in Smash. Getting a damage boost and clotheslining people for 40% is one of the best feelings in that game.

Doesn't matter, Smash is Nintendo's multi-IP shillfest, so a new pokémon gets a reserved spot, as there's ALWAYS a new pokémon game to sell to people. That they also own all the rights to it means it's quick and easy to add a new Pokemon fighter, instead of the arse it takes to get an outsider rep in.

They're never the most-popular starter anon, they're either dead fucking last or the middle child of the bunch, not offensive, not awesome. Decidueye only got considered as there was no chance he'd have added Primarina, when it has no legs and he wasn't given the option of using something other than a starter, clearly (again, Nintendo decide what they want promoted, Sakurai picks what he wants from that list)
