The best indication we have of active online players is the number of players within MAX Rank. If you achieve the MAX rank and just lose over and over afterwards, you'll keep dropping yourself down the numbered ladder. You won't be able to get the exact number but you'll see at the end of the month there'll be about 8,000+ players in MAX rank (this is based on recent months), and the amount of people achieving MAX rank is likely as low as 5% or less of players that actually took part in online battles that month. If we were to use that as our metric, then there are still 160,000 players taking part in ranked battles per month, and the number of people still using online functions in the game every month outside of ranked battles would be significantly higher than that again. While the bots are extremely noticeable on the y-comm now (they weren't even this bad three months ago) you can be sure that the actual human population is healthy enough for a game that's three years old and about to become redundant in 52 days.
