Gen 4 is the best one, and it's not even close

Gen 4 perfected the original Pokémon formula and, to this day, Pt and HGSS are the best games in the entire franchise.
Gen 5 started introducing the changes that culminated with the current Pokémon games being trash. Gen 3 was great, but every element introduced here was improved in gen 4.
Most people who hate gen 4 are gen 3 fans who can't accept their games were surpassed.
My first game was Yellow in 1998, by the way, so I'm by no means biased by nostalgia when I say gen 4 is the best one.

ah yes I love gen 1 but with objectively worse game design! It definitely is the best objectively and not just because I'm a dumbass zoomer who had it as his first game!

I disagree. Gen 5 brought things that we can point to as starting a negative trend, but that's not the fault of the games. If we examine each game in a vacuum then it's clear that BW/2 are simply better games. You're only gripe is that GF took the modernisation of the series as an excuse to pick the laziest route moving forward

Gen 4 is not very good anon and HGSS doesn't save it. The new designs are fairly weak and the remake exposed them for being a pretty bad game as it was so similar to the original

Where are the different paths I can take to reach the gyms in Platinum like I can do in Kanto?

Pretty sure that only applies to whether you want to enter Fuchsia from the left or the right.

Or maybe you're not very good at explaining yourself. I've played gen 1 multiple times I'm aware they're not very linear. You said it like every city has multiple ways you can enter them but not really.

I've skipped over many badges to get to the Safari Zone before.

Either way the only thing that immediately comes to mind is Fuchsia having two entrances you can use to enter it. It's more like the game has things you are required to do but there is some freedom in how you're allowed to tackle them. I wouldn't define that as having multiple paths. It's freedom in how you want to tackle this one path.
