I'm not hating on the new mechanic, I'm just confused on why they made it a hat. Is this some marketing thing they just discovered?

The former, with an added dash of it being braindead easy to do compared to before.

it's a helmet that controls the Pokemons mind, although not different from any other gimmick where they're also controlled. I like the concept at base, but the pokemon not changing design and the helmets are still ugly as shit lazy

The easiest way to customise every Pokémon's appearance - almost every single one has a head, and if they don't, we can either make it a comedic hat placement, or into the Gen IX dexcut pile you go

So the children playing know exactly what type the Pokemon has switched to. It's unfortunate because the crystalization effect on its own looks pretty good, but the hat is way over the top. Something relatively more subtle like a particle effect surrounding the Pokemon would've been much better.

They're supposed to be crowns to fit the treasure aesthetic while letting kids know that "the Pokémon became ___ type." beyond just a different color crystal filter (some people are colorblind anon).
It's a neat concept, but they kind of overdid on the goofiness factor.
