NTA. IN UNIVERSE they have nothing to do with to do with the original designs sure. But to say the designs weren't based on said originals is dishonest and objectively wrong. Wiglett would not be a Pokémon if Diglett didn't already exist. In terms of function out of universe they may as well be regional forms as they are designed to call back.
