They're pretty good, certainly better than a couple other regions who relegate their Gym Leaders to simple static encounters and give them no interactions with the player outside of their gyms.

This is also why gen 5 had the best Gym Leaders of the entire series.

Outside of the ugly overworld models, 6 had some nice symplistic designs. Everyone who was out of the norm looked like a cosplayer, rather than some insane alien trying their best to dress Human like most of the out-there Pokemon characters.

I think visually a good Gym Leader should be one that you can clearly see what type they specialize in purely from their design alone.
