Can we have a "postmortem" thread on Sword and Shield, now that the Gen is officially over? It's been a very unusual generation from the start, and I want to discuss how and why. For instance, does anyone else think it's weird how Turner, Masuda, and Ohmori were so central to the marketing of SwSh, but now there's nobody treated as the "face" of Scarlet and Violet? There's also the fact that it's the first generation without a dedicated anime season. The anime changed format dramatically and while some of the gen's characters were featured, it leaned a lot more heavily on the returning characters from older gens. Is this something that will be unique to Sword and Shield, or has Go and Masters changed the way the series will be marketed in the future? Another thing I've noticed is that Sword and Shield Pokemon, outside a select few shillmons, very rarely appear in marketing. Normally there's a blitz of marketing for new Pokemon as old Pokemon fall by the wayside, but this Gen centered a lot of old Pokemon. In fact a number of characters, such as Leon, have aces and Pokemon from other generations instead of new ones. In the Anime, Ash's Pokemon from Sword and Shield are the least utilized members of his team. In fact it feels like Gen 4 quickly eclipsed Gen 8. Of course we can't leave out discussion of the Dex Cut, which is the single most controversial move in the entire franchise history. But it's also worth discussing how a huge number of moves got cut as well. There was a rumor during the release season of Gen 8 that said>The head of TPC thought the Switch would fail >Forced development on the 3DS >The switch became a historic success >Scrambled to move the games over to the Switch Could this explain why the games ended up the way they did? The anime could have had to enter production without a clear vision of SwSh's story, the marketing needed to press ahead with very little material so they needed human faces to sell it, cut features, etc?

>>51544852 I think it's simple OP: Sword and Shield were not the main focus at the time and were really only made to fit the three-year-generation quota of the marketing cycle. In other words, it was filler, so the Anime and other things had no obligation to promote it. SV seems to be the game that Game Freak and TPC really wanted to focus their time and energy on.

>>51544852 >There's also the fact that it's the first generation without a dedicated anime season. Galar is too small and barren to sustain the anime. Journeys and the World tournament were necessary because Galar simply can't stand on its own.

That's why Gen1 mons were shilled so much, Galar's dex had to be hard carried by Kanto's star power or else no one would bother.

Without dexcut this gen would have been kinda like gen 6, not very memorable but decent And if all the gen 8 games had all the pokemon i’d be kinda interesting because with home you can freely move pokemon between galar, sinnoh and hisui, all 3 offering different experiences, but at least it’s over maybe someday in gen 10 or 11 things will change and we’ll finally have every pokemon

>>51544852 swsh is a fruit of GF's extreme conservatism
they slowly introduce features and make lukewarm changes to test the waters and gauge people's reactions
Ever since Masuda took point in gen 3 GF has been in "don't change a winning team" mode so to say
SwSh is a normal pokemon game except with some open areas, overworld pokemon, and bigger maps
Arceus builds on that
Gradual change

I'm about to ask an extremely large favour of you." >Aonuma's curiosity is piqued. Perhaps Masuda wants to use the Breath of the Wild engine as the basis for his new Pokémon games, to truly evolve the franchise to the next level? >He sits in his chair and waits for Masuda to speak. >"As you know, Aonuma-san, my team have been working quite hard to create the latest Pokémon™ games. For five hours a day, three days a week, we have spared only some expense in ensuring that there are many high quality female character designs, and even some new Pokémon™. However, making the game is very hard, and we are in need of your help." >Masuda turns and looks Aonuma dead in the eye. >"Aonuma-san, I would like to ask that you let us use the tree model your team created for Ocarina of Time to use in Pokémon™ Legends: Arceus" >Aonuma is confused, this was not what he expected at all. >"You.. You mean the tree model we created for the 3DS remake, right? I'd be happy to let you use it." >"No, not that one." >"What?" >"I'm afraid that the game we have created would not be able to handle such a high fidelity model. We'd have to cut another half of all Pokémon™ just to accommodate it. No, we require the original Nintendo 64 model." >Aonuma sits in stunned silence, he can't believe what he's hearing. >Finally, he pulls himself together enough to speak again. >"M-Masuda-san... do you actually have any idea how to make a game?" >Masuda chuckles, then closes his eyes and shakes his head. >"Haha, I don't really know..." >>51544852 SWSH was never going to be for 3DS. We know that TPC were one of the partners sent NX devkits in I think 2015. We also know that old HOME datemining suggests that they made tests with an upresed version of ORAS since Sun and Moon were still in development at the time. So those two things combined with how little of the game was done in the leaked SWSH prototype can only mean that it was always intended for the Switch.
The games turning out rough and rushed were Game Freak sturggled with HD development. Pretty much every debut gen on new hardware has issues. I think only RSE didn't

>>51546509 No, Leon's design, newcomer factor and generic happy-go-lucky jock attitude are definitely parts of the reasoning for hate. Had it been Cynthia, Lance, or Ash himself as the obvious top dog, the controversy would not have been as large.

>>51544852 what happened is that Pokemon GO made GameFreak reevaluate their place within TPCi while at the same time making them completely confident in the security and longevity of the Pokemon brand itself. so the smartest thing for them to do, from their perspective, was to diversify with Town. of course, Town was a massive failure, but they knew SwSh would be a massive success regardless of how many resources they siphoned away from it during development. then they let Iwao make a real game for some reason.
