People don't seem to be confused about the concept of convergent evolution. They're confused about Game Freak's design choices when deliberately referencing convergent evolution and how to tell the converged evolutions apart from the diverged ones apart from being told which is which. Chiefly, the later later is what's bother people the most. You can say that it's "realistic" that they are indistinct, but in a fantasy world where rules are determined by the creator, being "realistic" isn't enough to justify being confusing for many people.
I perfectly understand the concept of convergent and divergent evolution and how to tell them apart. I still don't like Wiglett's design however because it's way too derived from Diglett's to the point that it might as well be a regional form from a design standpoint. Or maybe Diglett is such a simplistic design that it was a bad choice for introducing this concept. If the original has no traits that says "this is a mole" and the convergent has no traits that says "this is a fish", it just leaves a lot of people asking "what are these and how do I tell them apart".
TLDR: Wiglett is not the best design they could have used for introducing convergently evolved Pokemon.
