it makes the game less engaging, and games like BW2 just become an A button mashing simulator where you just mindlessly click the A button to progress through the game instead of actually having to think about where you want to explore and what goals you want to accomplish.

The limited open worldness of gen 2 led to the bad level curve that people complain about. It's just going to be worse in Scarlet and Violet

Linearity itself isn't bad. But it's bad when the game itself makes very shallow use of it, which pokemon games do. They feel like a railroaded quest or tour trip rather than an adventure, especially since Gen 5.

How so? Linearity makes things more coherent and allows for Game Freak to set the difficulty accordingly. Gen IX will show just how bad the non-linearity meme is.

I don’t know what your vision of Pokemon is, but the games were never like this. Not even the trashnime was like this, Ash fights all the gym leaders in order and travels from one to the next. It’s not open world choose your own adventure, spic.

Exploration benefits when the player feels like they have a choice in what happens. In where to go and what to do.
If they feel that they're on a roller coaster it becomes a theme park ride rather than them exploring a setting on their own terms.

yes because pokemon scarlet and violet will be the first non-linear video games ever released, and if they're bad it will be because the concept is bad (not that GF are shit devs)

gens 1 and 2 allowed players for chose their progression and even gen 3 had many routes that allowed freedom to travel different paths

That could have been ameliorated by scaling the encounter level based on the player level, but locking it so that they player still feels progression as they head different directions.
There can be issues with this format, like if the player runs a bunch of different directions and opens up more and more map regions before backtracking, but you could account for that somehow.

Because they are retards who either didn't play gen 2 and parrot youtuber opinions or think you need to be on the level of the next gym leader when fighting them.
It IS an issue in gen 4, but gen 2's systems make it so you are borderline overleveled no matter what
