>>51571332Even SM/LGPE/Legends wasn't a great solution, but they at least involved Pokemon being used in every case. Let's Go even used your own Pokemon, even if it was complete nonsense half the time. The other two were more logical even if basically renting out other people's Pokemon is kind of lame. Is it better than wasting a move slot on fucking Defog, which in the only game it was an HM could actively ruin your own set up? Yes, but that's like the worst example I could have picked. Surf is good, it's even coverage if you use it on something like Tauros and Furret. In my theoretical example that would at least be a teaching tool of "hey, this Pokemon can swim, maybe it can learn water moves", make it a teachable moment. Maybe I just think about game design too much.
>>51571337I've not been a big fan of overworld encounters, and I've mentioned my problems with the lack of consistency especially in SS, but having Pokemon AI have certain reactions based on their nature would be a genuinely useful mechanical use AND also show Pokemon as living things with their own personalities and quirks. Like, imagine if whistling at a Timid Pokemon made it freak out a little, while a Calm one doesn't seem to mind. There's stuff that can be done there, but it's also something that would take a lot to differentiate them since there's 25 of the things. Ideally we'd have something like that, but ideally we wouldn't be able to clip out of bounds and that happens in games that have more time than your average Pokemon game. It does seem like something Game Freak would implement but then it would be oddly broken on release, or would only be used in the segment of the game where you play with your Pokemon which is nice to have but less useful and also you probably won't even notice it anyway.
