A good chunk of a show structured like Pokemon is character development (that rarely matters but it sticks eventually).
Ash has way too much baggage for his own good, it is not some huge benefit to stick his ugly mug on everything no matter the cost.
It's blatantly unsustainable if you want any sort of quality past a point in regards to Ash.
The anime is long since past that point.
