What would have happened if Z had been released?

Nothing would really change. There was already a gap year, it just would've taken devs from ORAS while SM continued and released in 2016, 3 years after the last gen like most others.

It wouldn’t have helped shit. Platinum was only an improvement because DP is the worst, most poorly polished game in the series so there was nowhere to go but up.

by “integrated into the main story” do you mean “shows up in the climax for 1 minute while the entire rest of the plot is exactly the same”? Because that’s literally what Emerald and Platinum did. SM actually gave Zygarde MORE attention than those.
