The only time it has any payoff is battle frontier and JN, so I wouldn't start at all if I were you. I wouldn't want to suffer hundreds of episodes for nothing. If you just want to watch good anime for kids, watch
digimon adventures or tamers unironically, subbed, if you're just curious about pokemon, don't even start. It's not worth it in your position.

Haven't seen DP-XY, but I was following the first half of DP while it was coming out and haven't seen a reason to see a single episode.
I saw a couple of episodes of bw, and it looks absolute garbage and every character is dumber than in OS, which is some fucking feat.
XY however, you'll see /vp/ either praise or hat it. Considering the very well known ending - and just the fact that it's in pokemon france in general - it's skippable.
SM is mostly boring, but some of the rocket episodes are nice.
JN is a step in the right direction, but it was still sub-par in general and terribly received so far.
If I didn't watch the pokemon anime as a secondary activity during something more engaging, I couldn't stand most of it.
