They've obviously settled on this as their preferred method for following Pokemon. They prefer to match the Pokemon's movement speed to its walk cycle instead of the other way around. It's the more natural-looking way of doing things, which I can respect, but the downside is that there are gonna be disparities between the player's movement speed and the Pokemon's. The opposite (having the Pokemon match the player's movement speed regardless of their walking animation) would look much worse, and the true solution (having every Pokemon's walk cycle naturally and logically match the player's movement speed) would be A) difficult and B) still look weird for some Pokemon which couldn't logically move as fast as the player. Something like Caterpie will never be able to match the pace of a person running unless you go bonkers and give it some weird method of locomotion like having it curl up and roll. Which would be interesting in its own way but again, that's a lot of work.

Whether they're slower or faster doesn't really matter, the point is that Girafarig's walk cycle has it moving slightly slower than the player's walk cycle. In this instance it would be pretty easy to just make it move a bit faster to match the player, but that's not a solution that can be easily applied to all Pokemon without it looking weird as fuck. As it is now, walk cycle dictates movement speed, which is the option that is closest to reality. Anyone who's ever walked a dog knows that they don't have a constant speed, and even if they did it probably wouldn't match yours. it's a stop and go experience, and the same would probably apply to most Pokemon.

why can't they compromise and have a more natural walking speed normally that speeds up when they get too far from the player?
hell, no one complained about pokemon being able to keep up in LGPE, and I'd call a caterpie being able to keep up with the player less immersion breaking than a pokemon teleporting behind you every five seconds because it can't keep up

Caterpie couldn't keep up with you in LGPE, actually. I'm pretty sure, at least in SwSh, that they do get faster when they're further away, but there's no guarantee that run cycle will match the player's either.

no, they just switch to their run animation when they get too far away. but then instead of staying in their run animation, they switch back to their walk animation when they get close again, which is what really kills it. Charizard constantly starts and stops flying, lands again and starts walking really slowly, starts flying again. and that's one of the Pokemon you'd definitely want to get right.

Its a problem if the pokemon disappears from the screen and suddenly teleports. But yeah I admit my solution would kinda double that specific workload for a company that just wants to shit out stuff without even doing QI.

This is blatantly untrue. There are slow as fuck wild Pokemon that are still aggressive in SwSh's overworld, like Greedent and Drampa.
