Trainer Red is canonically the world champion.

First off before gen5 when you won a VGC world championship your participating Pokemon would get the Red Ribbon, this was then replaced into the world champion ribbon.
When you defeat Red in HGSS you are given the LEGEND RIBBON.
We also know that Red participated in the PWT.
Fast forward in USM he retains the title of battle legend and he is the only guy in the series to hold such title alongside Blue.
Red is the battle legend for singles and Blue for doubles.
In the canon world of Pokemon though doubles are meaningless.
When you defeat him in LGPE you get the title of Pokemon MASTER this is the title Ash has been chasing for and which is rewarded during the current arc in journey. Even after winning the Alolan league he didnt get that title.
Also in Pokemon masters he is the one at the summit of the trainer world to become number 1.
