yeah he got more appearances than most rivals and anime only OCs.

Ritchie def should've returned, especially given that it's a anniversary celebration series (Journeys).

Hell, I would've liked Ritchie to have been the Kanto+Johto champion instead of Lance. Would've been the Red substitute.

Literally OC the character. He's literally a pallette swap of Ash. The only thing worse than his low functioning autism, is skills as a trainer(Pikachu and Pidgeotto was exhausted). The little shit gave his Pokemon the worst names possible and not only that, he puts stickers on his Pokeballs.

Electric Tale of Pikachu had a pretty good take on Ritchie.

In that version of the story, Richie also had a Charizard, and when it came down to 'zard vs 'zard, Oak at first was excited to see two high level Pokemon in a novice's league (which also clarifies that the newbies have their own league). Ash also couldn't control Charizard in this manga either, but in this case what happened was that Ash's Charizard went completely out of control and started seriously injuring Ritchie's Charizard. Ash was forced to recall his Charizard before it kills Ritchie's, which defaulted the victory to Ritchie.

Charizard isn't Mike Tyson. It's an animal being made to fight other animals for the entertainment of humans. It's more like dogfighting or cockfighting than it is boxing.

This is pretty much the tightrope the franchise has been walking since day 1. They try to frame it more like a boxing-style sport that the Pokemon themselves enjoy, especially in the anime where Ash rarely ever catches Pokemon before befriending them, and he always makes sure he enjoys battling as much as he does.

It's also a big reason why we'd probably never see an Adventures (or various other manga) adaptations because of the more "realistic" violence it depicts. It just opens a huge can of worms.

I always wanted that samurai kid in on of the first episodes to come back, because they said maybe they'll battle again some day.
But now I realize that was either a throwaway line that was added into the localized version, or it was just a polite goodbye that didn't have any actual meaning.

But Pokemon can run away, refuse commands, or even attack their owners. Pokemon are shown time and time again to be able to just exit or refuse to come out of their Pokeballs. Pokemon usually WANT to fight and if they don't want to, they won't, unless they get guilted about it and they care enough.

They quit thinking halfway through. If they kept thinking, Ash would have had a fair, full-length episode battle with Ritchie, and Ritchie would have lost from being outright better, not because Ash was exhausted and out of options at the start.

same reason we got a Detective Pikachu movie and not a "live action" adaptation of one of the games

Having Team Rocket fighting him before hand And sleep as a KO for the only time ever is just too much at once for the lose to feel earned

Also Ritchie needed some better Pokemon on his team, Pikachu, a Charmander and a Butterfree aren't exactly a major threat

Eh. It's pretty obvious Ash has surpassed Richie by leaps and bounds; I didn't think that people were hankering to see that fight. It'd be neat, but it's not super necessary.

Richie lost the very next match and only won his battle with Ash on a technicality. He didn't seem more impressive than Ash, Ash himself just seemed inexperienced.

According to the Ruby and Sapphire dex entry: CHARIZARD flies around the sky in search of powerful opponents. It breathes fire of such great heat that it melts anything. However, it never turns its fiery breath on any opponent weaker than itself. This falls in line with game canon, anime canon, and so on. There's even an island that is made specifically to train Charizard.
