What is "soul" for you?

For me, it's pic related. An adventure, followed by my favorite pokémon. Cartoonish villains, a simple plot, colorful and nice sprites, a nice world, that you want to discover. It hardly gets any better than this.

A genuine answer for me, I think, would be something that feels like it has a lot of hard work, effort, and passion into it.

Not just "old good new bad", there's a huge difference in quality with the more recent games (being rushed, adding a bunch of gimmicky shit just for it to be removed next gen, routes becoming straight lines etc)

I always enjoyed a less is more approach. The more subtle the story and features are, the less in your face everything is, that's what is SOVL to me.

PLA and Sun and Moon vs SWSH is a good comparison
They aren't perfect but PLA and SM care about their worlds, their atmosphere, their characters, while SWSH just has everything thrown together into a big fucking mess

soul means that the creator got to achieve something close to their genuine personal vision of the end product. it gives the audience something that they may not have known they wanted
soulless is making the media for "the audience" directly and catering to what that vanilla, braindead, mediocre, generalized mob wants. in trying to satisfy everybody, nobody ends up fully satisfied.

I think a better comparison would be BDSP vs PLA, games released close together to celebrate Sinnoh. I don't mind BDSP personally, but it's obvious how much of a cash grab remake it is, not going to same lengths as remakes before it, not even made by Gamefreak, it was made out of what felt like necessity rather than actually having a want to do it, that feels soulless to me. PLA however, while rough in many aspects, I feel like I can see GF trying to do something with it, trying to flesh out lore, trying to improve some aspects like animations and the way Pokemon react to the environment and player, and trying to take Pokemon in a new angle, that's soul to me.

The only real definition of soul is self-sustaining nostalgia, any other definition is a product of coping with its use.
You feel good because you like a game, and then decide that the good feeling is the reason you like the game, forming a loop of self-justification that quickly becomes blind nostalgic praise and called "soul" to pretend it's real. It's a serious issue if it gets out of control because the user actually convinces themself that they're correct and had a reason at some point.

For me, soul is when a game really connects with me, my Pokémon game example cor this is emerald, it isn’t nostalgia as I played it for the first time 2 months ago, everything just clicked with me in that game,the atmosphere, the what i call the “fun factor”, the visuals, all great, a non Pokémon related game that also i consider soulful is mario 64, i did not grow up with an n64 but when I played the game I immediately fell in love with it, maybe I just created this romanisation with older games, for more recent stuff I could say Warhammer total war 2
