It's probably too soon to say this before sv come out but barry is and will still be the worst rival in the series

I don't understand what they were thinking with Gen 6.
Tierno should've been deleted outright
Trevor should be your dex rival/professor's assistant. His gimmick would be he uses pokemon from the version you aren't playing so you can easily register them as seen in your pokedex
Calem/Selena should've been the battle rival. Somehow their dialogue made them sound depressed so idk how i'd fix that
Shauna can be the friendly rival; I guess.
Not sure what I would do with the Masked Heroes of Kalos. They seemed largely irrelevant and we never even found out their identities.

Wally should be the main Hoenn rival. Birch Jr. was a mistake. Barry is fine. Only irreddemables are the aforementioned Birch Jr.,Trace, XY gang, Hau and Hop. Marnie could be improved with the added screentime from deleting hop. Klara and Avery are the same and good in concept but Klara is fuck ugly so delete here too.

I've liked pokemon since as long as I remember but my family couldn't afford very many games when I was young. I've had blonde hair and my best still (even now) named Barry after me, and made me feel apart of watching him play the game, and every time he replayed the game and when bdso came out he also did then too so he has a special place in my heart.

Nah Serena/Calem are cool honestly, they're the loser and you're the winner. And not just in the literal sense, as that'd apply to all rivals otherwise.
Very unique among the rivals, i'd put them above Wally, Hau(or his even lesser clone) and especially the other XY """rivals""".

Just a very amusing experience. Its a subtle one though.

I feel like you're describing Hau more than the XY rival. Granted, most of that characterization for Hau is in USUM and the base game kinda just drops him after Aether Paradise, so I can understand why you'd miss it (or stopped paying attention since Hau doesn't seem to be having much of an arc at all until Gladion shows up, not to mention a bit of optional dialogue really elucidates a lot about Hau).

Depends on taste obviously as they aren't going for something that the other rivals are.

Obviously characters who get curbstomped constantly and do nothing else aren't going to be "cool".
And being a bitch is a quality, Brendan/May might be unrepentant assholes; but thats not really related to what you do to them.
Serena/Calem get frustrated because you beat them at every corner, until they just give up. Which i guess Hop technically does but he just suddenly bitches out after being an generic as fuck for an entire game.
