This was the first pokemon I've played since red on the gameboy pocket in 1999 and I thought it was pretty good

Why does everyone online seem to not like it?
Also which one should I play next, preferably on 3ds

You're going directly from Gen 1 to Gen 8. Apart from the Pokemon designs and the dungeons, which are way worse in SwSh than in RBY, it's an overall improvement. The Galar routes are garbage, but so are the Kanto routes. Play Gens 2, 3, 4 (not DP), 5, or 7 and then play SwSh. You'll see why people dislike it. The Dexcut is only the icing on the cake.

I've said it previously, and I'll say it again, SwSh is the first time where I jut couldn't find any enjoyment in it, even for the first playthrough.

Dexcut isn't even something that matters for someone playing older games to experience them.
If you're just gonna play through a game, not having all the Pokemon in it is basically the same thing.

BW or BW2 is the best choice overall, but if you wanna play a 3DS game, I'd say ORAS isn't too terrible.

SwSh is okay until after the 3rd gym, then it gets pretty linear after that, even more so than normal pokemon games as there's no optional caves or forests to check out. Everything is just out in the wild areas if you need it.
Not to mention the DLC is more like a bandaid to fill the void of nothing that is the postgame.

I would just suggest ORAS, or even the og Emerald. If you don't mind romhacks, I heard Inclement Emerald is good.

I'm replaying shield, too, and pretty surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. Outside of the wild area the game looks great, and the dlc adds systems that makes the endgame feel a lot more integrated than most games. The people claiming it has a lack of content are probably not engaging with the systems at all. (Or they don't like the content, which is fair)

Personally it felt empty as shit for what should have been a switch game. I expected a larger scale but it quite literally felt like a 3ds game ported and the storyline was so barebones and dogshit that I actually gained respect for Sun and moon in the process. The starter evolutions are probably the most disappointed I've ever been in terms of final forms and I didn't expect that to ever happen after Gen 6. I don't care about Pokemon getting cut but when the excuse was to "improve animations" and they just ported the 3ds models, it looked even more pathetic as I was playing through XD & Colosseum during SwSh leak season. Even though the character designs are nice, I didn't even enjoy the characters themselves. Especially when the champion is just another step for Charizard shilling. Hell, you start the game and the poster in his room is literally Kanto mons saying "These are the most popular pokemon in Galar!" Like what? The pokemon discovered in Galar are so shit that Kanto discoveries are the most popular? Regardless, I probably would have enjoyed the game at least a little if it released with the DLC content but after playing through it on launch, I just wanted to put the game away and never touch it again.
