Exactly (when the games were made) GSC was a sequel of RBY so having so many Gen1 mons featuring so heavily was made sense. And Kanto being the post game worked because you could see how Kanto changed during the time skip. And HGSS having Kanto was to being faithful to the intent of the originals. But if Game Freak were to make a new game featuring Johto it would make sense to focus most of attention Johto and Gen2 mons since it wouldn’t be a sequel. Plus seem enough of Kanto.

NPCs that chill with you as you go on your adventure. They have their own pokemon, and if you so choose, you can switch between single battles and multi-battles anytime in the game.
NPC conversations like Bravely Default party chat. It's always opt-in, so that players who don't want to talk to their companions aren't forced to, and can forget about them.
Maybe have players pick their companions from a pool of 6 different teams, and 10 different personalities/looks.

I want HMs or some version of them back. I don’t miss having to waste slots on HM moves but I do miss the idea of being able to ride your Pokémon. Ride Pokémon are lame, they’re just a public service. Same goes for Corviknight taxi or whatever. I wanna ride my arcanine or fly on my talonflame or surf with my azumarril. All these quality of life changes are sucking the magic out of the Pokémon world. I want to feel immersed in the world with my team, not just having them pop out for battles and the inevitable Pokémon camp/amie/whatever they introduce. Maybe even just make it so you can regesiter some of your own Pokémon as ride Pokémon. Give me something.

Hot Take: The main problems were BDSP were ones that were in Diamond and Pearl to begin with, and the games would've been much more acceptable and better received if it was just the same thing but for Platinum instead.

It’s not “Gen 1 bad”, it’s “if Johto were to get a new game it’s makes sense to do something different than the previous Johto games since people want the old experience they can just play the older game , also modern games tend to be more focus on Pokemon introduced in the same generation as the main region the game takes place so a modern Johto game would logically go in that direction, also some the biggest complaints are “Johto’s too small” “leaning in Kanto” “glorified RBY DLC” and “the leaders uses NOOOOO Gen2 Pokémon” may as well “fix” those”

Johto has all johtomons included
Kanto has all kanto and johto based regional variants in it. Also gen 4 cross evolutions. Lt. Surge would be cool to fight with an electivire and h-electrode

I want to live in the timeline where they followed through on gen 5 being a soft reboot.
For gen 6, instead of Kalos and megas, we'd have gotten another american region with new evolutions for many of the Unova mons, as well as other nods to gen 5 such as Kyurem getting its complete form. It wouldn't have sold well, but it'd be what gamefreak actually wanted to make, and to me that matters more.
