Does anyone hate the way pokemon battles have become cummercialized in the universe in Gen9? It used to be a clean-cut activity. Just you and your partner, not a pretense to raise money on the streams.

Back then, the idea of a pokemon trainer was the same of a man trying to become a proffesional pet owner, which is possible, but surrounding your universe about it is dumb.
Then again, YuGiOh managed to surround it's universe about a children's card game, so I guess pokemon can do it too.

I mean, if you were a professional pokemon trainer, likely having a circle of pro trainers you speak to, would you *not* try to monetize training sessions by streaming what would be the equivalent of scrims? Pokemon battling has been a professional spectator sport since the first episode of the anime, after all.
The Gen 8 "football culture" take on it sucked in execution, but I think that's mostly a scale/pacing issue. How many people would realistically show up for little timmy's first gym battle? However, having that sense of scale, being a rising-star trainer moving from the little leagues to the top of the regional circuit with fans and stuff could very easily be a great aesthetic for a generation.

Yes, mostly because they're a lot more rarer. And pokemon in general could do with more depressed characters. We only have Volkner so far.

We've had Burglars, Sailors, Mountain Climbers, Scientists, Bike Riders, Ninjas, Police, Martial Artists, Soldiers, Nurses, Doctors, Painters, Technitians, Metalworkers, Miners, Musicians, Gardeners, Dancers, Exorcists, Fashion Models, Knights, Businessmen and Office workers.

Last Gen we had to recieve an official endorsment to participate in the league. Leon's champion cape is covered with brand marketing.

From the very first gen there had always been "adjacent" activities to battling with pokemon. It made the world feel lived and grounded somewhat.

Pretty sure there was a commercial aspect at least since Gen 3. The Battle Frontiers were almost like carnivals, and some trainer classes included perforners and even idol singers.
