We have the Capsule Mon pitch, its not related to that shit at all, Pokemon came from a much more traditional RPG that eventually became more focused on the monster aspect.
The early pokemon very notably lack evolutions except in some cases. Perhaps its off the mark to say that it wasn't a concept(the Nidos existed from the start) but that evolution was insanely rare at the time.
Golem and Graveler are grouped with a bunch of mons that never got other members, its pretty safe to say that the mons were not designed with eachother in mind.
