hell, pokemon now has three free to play gacha games(if you count GO), that's three times the whales, why the fuck would the "main" games that serve as nothing more than an advertisement for these three plus TCG and anime have anymore resources and time pulled into it than the bare minimum?
play showdown or romhacks, that's the only way to experience actual challenge in a pokemon game anymore
