When did Pokemon turn into kid shit?

Look at the first game. The pokemon were less cute pets, more monsters that the trainers tamed with violence (pic related) lots of dark stuff like the poke tower, etc. The game does not feel like a kid game, but a game for all ages like final fantasy.

Then the anime released and pokemon was turned into a thing for toddlers. What changed?
