Isn’t Yokai Watch practically dead at this point? I know the anime is still running but no new game, new movie, merch isn’t thriving as much, barely hear anything about that Pokémon Go like game etc

Level-5 is so fucking retarded with this shit, its unreal. They had a Golden Goose on their hands and they couldn't even let it be for 2 years before taking that axe to its skull. The Western marketing was also fucking dogshit, and it could've been WAY bigger if it wasn't (as proven by how YW1 sold half a mil overseas even with one of the worst ad campaigns ever conceived), which also wasn't helped by how the still tried doing the two versions shit in the West with 2.
Literally everything that could go wrong with this series did, it's almost impressive

Yokai Watch wasn’t even trying to compete with Pokémon which is the ironic thing about it all. The thing just blew up after the anime premiered and the sequel came out. TemTurd flopped because, instead of making a good game, they just copy-pasted Pokemon without the decades of nostalgia that have brainwashed people into consooming. Their entire business model was based on getting spite purchases from jilted Pokemon fans who weren't happy with SWSH, which might have gotten them a little more attention in the short term, but isn't sustainable in the long term when it brings nothing new of its own to the table.

People eat up unabashedly Japanese-centric shit all the damn time, and all of the attempts to Westernize it fell ridiculously flat. The setting was far too entrenched in asian culture to try and change, and the fact that they even attempted ended up alienating more people than if they had just let it be. This isn't even mentioning how it came back to bite them in the ass hard with YW3, thus leading to them having to make a bunch of changes to the premise, INCLUDING visuals, which drove up costs on what was assuredly not gonna be a massively successful venture.

The thing that bugs me with YW3 is that even if they wanted to set it outside Japan, there’s so much material they could pull from as far as “cryptids and weird specters from around the world” goes. But they didn’t touch any of that, and most of the YW3 critters felt like the same sorts of concepts as the previous games but with some token “American” aspect slapped on them.

Any public domain variants will not be treated with the same niceness, and may in fact be scorned for trying to "mooch off of the original".
