I don't get the hype, it's so melodramatic. It has nothing deep to say and just repeats the same boring platitudes in every cloning story in the history of scifi.

There are episodes of the anime more profound than this, there are episodes of the anime darker than this, the dark atmosphere in this movie is fucking decorative at best

The short in the beginning about the professor's daughter and Mewtwo was really nice. Speaking as someone who saw this in theaters when it came out, most enjoyment of it is nostalgia. Same reason why they remade it, for nostalgic KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pandering.

Dude, grow up. Yes there is darker shit, yes there is deeper shit. However, you seem to forget this was in 1999. The First movie, the first extended play, and in all honestly far better then most of which followed.

In retrospect it's nothing special but at the time it was amazing. You unironically had to be there. There wasn't a child in the theater who wasn't on the edge of their seat during this sequence.

Dude all the promotional stuff around that time was amazing too. I kept my fucking Mewtwo cup from burger king or McDonald's until the paper fell apart. And BK also had the best toys on the market and they were fucking free with kids meals. All the people that got into it by pokemon go (which by all rights was actually bigger than pokemania) only got a taste of the fucking nightmare that truly was pokemon.

It comes from Pocket Monsters: The Animation.
Which is a pair of novels written by Takeshi Shudo. Some of it is dark some of it is weird. Its basically its own, pardon the pun, pocket universe.
