There shouldn't be any roadblocks outside of natural ones like bodies of water and walls you need Koraidon/Miraidon for, so if that happened I'd be pretty fucking upset.

Due to the hilarious HM thread yesterday and today, I have been talking to my friends about them and roadblocks in pokemon games
Some of them really do prefer the story based progression with npc or event based roadblocks
I'm 100% on the side on HMs, personally, but it was pretty interesting to see the divide.

HMs are still story-based roadblocks though. If this thing is truly "Open world" then you should be able to challenge any gym in any order. The only blocks should be dungeons and caves and true post-game content.

They added level scaling in the SwSh Wild Area and the BDSP underground. They just need to find a way to integrate this level scaling into gyms (probably what they're trying in SV), then trainer battles.

it wouldn't work. Overpowered wild pokemon in early game worked in SwSh and PLA because in the first one they'd give you a bunch of pokedolls to escape, and in the second you can just do a 480° and run away

Most JRPGs don't claim to be open world. And most JRPGs have a set story not an arbitrary collection quest that can technically be done in any order.
