What the hell even is the difference between the two for each release anyway? Only games I've bothered with that do that are the Zelda Oracle games, but those are two separate games that link together.

Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green are good basic Pokemon games. Anyone could beat those games. If you're coming from more modern games then the control set up and overall gameplay loop of Legends Arceus would make getting a grip on the basic systems much easier. Can't go wrong with any of the DS games either except for Diamond and Pearl. Finally the 3DS games are divisive for Pokemon fans partly because they were made with people like you in mind. The 3DS games in general are a pretty good pick in your case as well

Depends what you want anon.

If you want to play an 2d one.
Probably BW2 With the key for hard mode.

If you want a 3d game.
XY is pretty good but feels a bit rushed on the second half, USUM is ok, but if you want standard 8 badges and a e4, skip it.

Sword and shield is Aight. But really if you want to play something for the switch. You may as well just wait for the new game in a month. It's probably the same price to.

All of those above are fine and pokemons does not have an order to play, just pick the one you that caught your attention the most. Or just wait for the new one that will come out for the Switch next month.

I would suggest playing Black/White before BW2 because it's a literal sequel. BW2 is a good game, but there's a bunch of characters and plot points you won't understand (like Cheren and Bianca, etc)

The dex is great.
There's a lot of dialogue compared to the first games.
The game gets a lot better after 2nd badge.
You don't have to play BW1 to understand most of the story but you'd probably enjoy it more that way.
The game is mostly linear but sometimes you can explore other routes.
Don't expect a hard game.
Most people like this game for what comes after the Pokémon league.

Given how big the regional dex is in XY, it would probably be the best game to start the series with if you want to get acquainted with a large amount of pokemon, even if the games are mediocre.
