>>51694123>>51694298SM and especially USUM are overhated in that they don't lack in side content at all, they might not be of high quality, mind you. but the games do offer a lot of optional areas with unique rewards, half of Ula’ula Island being entirely optional, and other places like Ten Carat Hill or Route 7 being only explorable after moving onto another section of the game. It is comparable to BW, though I'd say SM and USUM provide a more interesting region as it is not a straight line, though B2W2 might challenge it.
