But there are two issues. It just didn't really have that much impact on the show, and a lot of his ideas verge into eye rolling misery porn territory. Like the anime is generic schlock. Some kids show still feel like they have a strong creative voice and vision behind them but if you rewatch pokemon it is paint by numbers stuff. There are occasional neat episodes and likeable characters. But even here a lot of what gets celebrated are jokes added in the dub about James being a raging homo. Reading about all the stuff he wanted to do wouldn't really have helped. You can tell when he was having a manic episode cause it'd go from oh being a trainer is hard, to Ash's mom resents him also your pikachu will die if it is evolved too early. You can tell it is an alcoholic taking it out on this world.
