What defines a "main series" pokemon game?

How are the gamecube games not "main series" when you can transfer pokemon to and from them and they have the exact same functionality as any other pokemon game?

It's weird. With Colosseum you can argue that there are no wild Pokemon, but Pokemon XD has more "main series game" features than PLA, so I guess the only criteria is whether GameFreak developed the game or not. But even that has been overturned recently by the release of BDSP. So... I dunno. Whatever they call main series game is a main series game.

It's pretty much whatever TPC decides. They don't even have to be developed by GF anymore as we've seen by BDSP

Anything staff employed by Game Freak worked on at the time of development. GO is more mainline than any the TPC games, as Masuda and other Game Freak staff worked on its development.
And had you opened your eyes, you'd see how the gamecube games took pains to NOT be the traditional Pokémon experience, despite facilitating transfer (that was okayed by Game Freak as they could force people to buy gamecubes to get Johto pokémon, which helped Nintendo sell units of the console as well as the handheld, which they needed all the help they could get that Gen) an didnt count any Game Freak staff (at the time, they ended up donating 100 staff to GF in Gen 4 for Gen 5's dev cycle).

It's main series as long as it has all mons up to that point, and shares a similar battle system
Colosseum and XD are main series
LJewPE, SWSHit, BDickSP, PLAss aren't.

But even aside of dexcut, I hate how... messy? the switch era is
like, weird Kanto revamp into shit game into scummy DLC into weird Sinnoh re-edition into neat spin-off
The games just have no connectivity one with another and I hate it. Doesn't feel like a cohesive gen.

LGPE is part of the 3DS era, not the Switch era, it's still considered Gen 7

Gen 7:

USUM as the main "competitive" game
LGPE as its own self-contained thing

Gen 8:

SwSh + DLC as the main competitive game
BDSP and PLA as their own self-contained things

SwSh was kept alive with constant updates while BDSP and PLA were just released and then left to die

As linear as the newer games are, they at least have routes to explore and wild Pokemon to catch.

That's right, the Switch.
to which games can you transfer from LGPE?
That's right, only Home and therefore not Alola games
the only point you can make for LGPE to be 3DS era is that it has Megas but it's a stretch more than anything

ColXD should be considered side-series, like LGPE.
Other spin-off titles are considered spin-offs, such as Ranger & Mystery Dungeon.
