It was only a few years ago that I found out it didn't have any boosted stats. Played through yellow a hundred times and never felt like Pikachu was weak.

Yes, In fact I clipped Takeshi with a Pidgey and him, and once he learns Thunderbolt pretty much is goat.

Yellow is fun to play. Get a Mankey early on to be able to beat Brock's gym. Plus you get all 3 starters, how is it hard?

I played all the way through Yellow for the first time a few months ago. I don't really remember my final team, only that I had a Sandslash that carried hard with autocrits and I got super lucky and got a Kangaskhan. I also think I used a Cloyster.
Regardless I benched Pikachu around Surge.

I didn't have the heart to box him because of the cool following mechanic but he definitely went to the back of my party while my chad Butterfree did all the work.
