Crobat's a decent choice because Zubat can learn Fly in Gen 4, in Gen 2 it can't learn it until you get Crobat, which means you either need an auxiliary flier or you go the entire first half of the game without Fly since Crobat is a friendship evo.

Skarm is super underrated. It sucks having to wair until 7 badges, but you won't regret it. It has a sick ass sprite in HGSS too.

don't know if this is cheatin' but I used a magmarizer from platinum that I had lying around and used it right after I caught Magmar since magmortar learns moves at the same rate
