They were fearful Trump was going to instate his Republican buddies in office and have abortion, gay marriage, transgender surgeries, etc. illegal in America so they became louder and used a lot of shaming tactics on the general public.
"Say black lives matter", "Silence is violence", "Trans rights are human rights". These phrases were adopted to peer pressure people who were on the fence or neutral. If you responded with anything other than acceptance, you would be called racist, transphobic, a TERF, full of white privilege, etc. Average Joe doesn't want to be publicly called a transphobic on his Facebook page where his family and friends can see, so he just agrees. I mean, leftists quite literally got the definition of racism changed so white people couldn't be included.
Social media moderation is confirmed to have a lefty-biased, hence why they get away with things like kafkatrapping and cancel culture. Righties have their own methods they use, they LOVE feeling "more objective, and fact-based" and have all those statistics ready to prove a point.
Obviously, not everyone fell for the, "I don't wanna be called prejudice online!" trick and many ended doing the opposite just to spite them. Then people realize they could capitalize on this by pinning the two sides against each other so they can get views on their stupid article about Splatoon characters being confirmed non-binary. One side argues how they're "disappointed in Nintendo". The other says, "Stop forcing Nintendo to adopt your groomer beliefs".
That's basically how you get two extremes being vocal online for every single fucking thing that is media related. Pokemon? Arthur? Mother-fucking-PAW Patrol? It's all political now, everything is political. Buying a Starbucks coffee means you support #BLM, reading a Harry Potter book makes you a TERF, what the fuck ever.
