Same. Kanto didn’t need another remake, and it being lets go garbage just showed the direction of this franchise is no longer making a good product.
Realistically though, it started with ORAS. Both because GameFreak didn’t actually want to make it, and they halfassed it because muh phones.

There's only so many Japanese regions they could make, but Unova wasn't really the best way to handle the first foreign-based region. A single city is such a bizarre choice to create an entire region based on.
