So you want to write a REALISTIC romantic take on pokemon^W Gardevoir. Fine, a noble goal. Let’s see how we can do that.
At the very high level you essentially have 2 approaches:
Write her completely as a typical human girl
Write her as a pokemon.
The first approach is fairly trivial - you get all the baggage you need to explore romantic relationships under known rules. She behaves and acts like a typical girl (shy, confident, “tsundere” etc), just in a body of Gardevoir, for some god forsaken reason. This is essentially lewdfic because her only connection to the pokemon is the aforementioned body so this is the only pokemon-related thing of interest you can explore. I mean, really, if you want to read about relationships with human girls there are trainer fics. This approach also assumes a lot of things given by default, which you would normally develop, like, an actual character. And you can still do that, but then you start to run into similar issues as the second option, which is…
Write gardevoir as a pokemon! Now we are talking, now we are Pokemon. How do we pokemon these pokemons, though? Are we going to consider them fully sapient and sentient, with averaging to close human intelligence or as essentially animals, give it or take. We could argue about what the show does or does not tell us about this subject, but this is not the point right now. If you are going for an “essentially an animal” route then it is just like writing about a dog or a dolphin. I guess you could go for the Ernest Thompson Seton way of writing her in that context, but this is outside of the scope of a silly argument I want to make.
So then, we are back to the final destination: writing her as a fully sentient and sapient being capable of complex thought and emotions, relationships (more or less).
