It's not autism it's just common sense. First stage pokemon are designed to be the cutest, final stage pokemon are designed to be cool looking, but middle stages are just an awkward middle ground with worse appeal in both areas. Just a temporary form you can't market to tell plushies, but don't keep in your party long enough to get attached to since you're just waiting for them to reach their final form. They get less effort put into their designs because of this too.

-Grovyle is peak of it’s line. Not even a PMDfag
-While Rade is cooler it’s not prettier than Roselia(belongs in 3rd tier)
-Loudred, Whirlepede, and Lairon are just as good as their other stages

Overall I found that there aren't that many designs in the crop that I'd consider bad. Which surprised me given that mid evos have a reputation of seeming like awkward puberty phases. I actually really appreciate how well so many of them bridge the gap, even when looking at the retroactive ones. Without mid-evos I don't think the identity of the series would be nearly as strong.

Hot take I didn't even get to list is that I genuinely like Grotle.

Unironically all three of the original Gen 1 starters have me favoring their middle form over their final forms, though their first forms aren't bad. Each one just has a good look to them, and I feel like most other starter trios have had at least one stinker in their middle evos ever since. Probably not a very controversial opinion, but I've always felt that way even when I was younger. The only other major ones I can think of are most middle evos that require a trade evolution since most of my playthroughs have not involved trading, so Haunter and Kadabra as an example have an edge over their final forms.

Former final evos are cheating too desu. I quite enjoy Ursaring and Magneton but I don't consider them middle stages, they were concieved as final evos and then got further evos tacked on.
Out of real middle stages I think I'll go with Wartortle.

I love Nidorino like ya wouldn't believe. Nidoking is my favorite Pokemon, & Nidoran M would be my canon starter, if I lived in the Pokemon world. As much as I love 'king, I feel a bit of hesitation evolving Nidorino, just because I'm losing one cool design for another.

Haha great choice bro. Personally, my favorite middle stage evolution is Lucario, he's so cool! Really just head and shoulders above all the other middle stage evolution pokemon out there. Compared to Lucario, it's like they weren't even trying with most other middle stage pokemon.
