Why do some fans get upset when you refer to certain characters from the anime with their English name?

It's like getting mad at people for saying Charizard and not Lizardon.

do you like the 4kids changes? Thats how /a/shnime fags view all US dub changes. Its a perspective thing about how close something needs to be to the original vision. Not like localizers bother with changing the names in other jap properties now.

I think it makes sense that they still do that with Pokémon (at least the games) since there are many characters whose names are puns or follow a theme (like the professors being called after trees).

I don't usually use the japanese names, I just said that there are official romanized names for every pokémon so you don't actually have to use "the japanese letters" to write them.
