Gen 5 is by no means my favourite, but I don't really see what's wrong with it?

Spirtes tweening to make them feel like living entities, the field doesn't look like a figurine stand and the UI is sleek and fitting.

Personally, I think the Diamond and Pearl battle UI looks worse: battlefield looks unnatural and UI look disgusting.

I don't like Kirby 64, nor do I like Mario Kart 64. Infact, I don't like most fifth generation console games.
It's 2.5D because the mass majority of the interactable objects on screen are 2D sprites, layered on top of a 3D modelled environment.
It would also be 2.5D if the mass majority of the interactable objects on screen were 3D, put up in a 2D grid.
