Also I think it might be based on a Graveyard Grim; old priests used to believe the first person buried in a fresh graveyard would have their soul trapped forever as a spirit to protect the dead from satan/witches/grave robbers (aka a Grim), so to make sure no man was kept from entering heaven, they killed a dog and buried it first, so that the dog would become the guardian for the graveyard instead.
If we get an evoltion, I expect it to have lore that implies that inspiration.
