The reason is that a screen display is made up of a pixel count. That's why. Now, what's funny about this is that resolutions are usually in a power of 2.
For screen resolutions, the end result(IE:1920x1080 is really just 1440^2.) But for sprites? It's usually something like 8x8, 16x8, etc.
