Now that you mention it, Charizard also looks a bit off. Gen 3 onwards has a more concise color scheme it pushes for the fire types, but the first two have duller yellows.

Id move the benchmark to after Infernape, but this is the right idea.

They get progressively cartoonier as they go. Typhlosion looks fine next to Zard and Blaziken, but next to cereal mascots like Cinderace and Incineroar? Yeah, the cool anime art style Typhlosion has definitely looks out of place. And that's definitely not Typhlosions fault.

My issue with Blaziken is that it could've been more prehistoric looking, kinda like a Oviraptor or Terrorbird, and still could've kept the kicking theme/fighting type.

Cyndaquil was originally a Ground type that got shoved into being a starter after Dynabear fell through. The rest of the line got banged out in a hurry which led to Charizard's stats being infamously copy-pasted onto Typhlosion.

Cyndaquil originally had spikes instead of flames on its back, its original typing is unknown. However, due to the dynamic process of character creation it was decided that its design and concept would work better with flames. In addition it was made part of a 3 stage family and Quilava and Typhlosion were meticulously crafted to both to show Cyndquil go from a timid mouse to a ferocious predator all while making sure that all members of the family has enough design elements in common to show that they were related to each. Some time before or after this, Cyndaquil was rightfully promoted to being a starter to replace Dynabear (likely because Dynabear line had a rather bland design with its last stage looked too much like a much worse version of Arcanine). Like all the Johto starters it shares of its stat values from the Kanto staters likely as a an attempt to avoid minmaxing, however because the Typhlosion was intended to be fast special attacker it was given 109SpA, a completely new stat that Charizard never had since eh special stat only ever existed from GEn 2 onward.
