But they weren't champions. The battles against them were basically "It feels wrong to just give you the mantle without one big final battle, so here's one last roadblock".

Alder suffers from Pokemon’s lack of actual story content. Like the point is clearly he’s an old man who’s past his prime and has lost his original champion team to time but they never really let you interact with him enough to go deep into that

God I wish the games just fleshed out all the gym leaders and champions and elite four guys a bit more and built the story around the characters instead of copy and paste end of the world + gang + cutscenes + mandatory legendary battle

This is pretty interesting and not something I really picked up on, but you may have a point.

From the player's perspective, you basically see Alder lose to someone other than the player, then serve as an underwhelming postgame fight (assuming you even decide to fight him). In many ways, he just comes across as kind of a sideshow, so it's no wonder he tends to get brushed aside in favor of the other Champions.

That's simply impractical anon. What do you think Pokemon games are - interactive media that are a part of the world's single most profitable franchise that could easily have money poured into it to up the quality money that would be trivial in the face of the billions of dollars in profits??
