It's okay to approach quirky light hearted comedy with some serious topics. There's a lot to be said for having a somber moment between two characters, even if they're typically goofy. Not everyone can be a comedian every day, after all.
The problem is that it's not okay to just outright try to pad the humor with it, or vice versa.
