What the fuck is this design?
Why is a Pokemon that's supposed to be a magic knight wearing a big ass dress?
Are there any other instances of new talent ruining pre existing pokemon with new forms and evolutions that go completely against the original intended theme?

Gardevoir is like a guardian angel concept. Empathy Pokemon. There is also the idea that it's based off of how Shakespeare actors were all men but I have no idea where that comes from.
It's like an interpretive dancer.

they dont care about continuity, they care about making an impression with the audience, specifically whichever part of that audience will bring in more attention. gardevoir became a (if not The) waifumon, so of course theyre going to retcon the "sir knight" thing by making it look more feminine with this ballroom dress thing since thats whats going to get the majority of people hyped

once you accept that theyre never going to have sensible designs again, and everything is now designed for maximum meme potential, you will stop feeling the need to question it. they are a company, they want money and attention. staying true to their roots doesnt benefit them at all.

No, it only ever says "sana", it never says "sanaito".
It's obviously partially based on a knight. It has helmet looking hair and gives its life to protect its trainer. It's like a knight combined with what you're talking about.

I definitely hear at least the "sanai" in the anime one and a little bit in the game one you posted. Plus lots of "Sir/Sah" which also gets my previous point across.
Just seems accented imo but I guess that's as far as we'll get
Anyway, never really got the "mage knight" bit since the hair never really resembled a knight's helm to me. Too open and the dress was too flowy.
Honestly came across more floral than anything.

It's an idea which was instilled early on in Gardevoir's existence, when Wally catches an always male Ralts. At one point, I would have said it's a girly knight, not androgynous at all, and Wally's Ralts' gender was probably just some weird programming fluke. But now that they've doubled down on it in Masters EX, I don't know. It clearly shows they aren't scared of showing Gardevoir as a partly masculine species.

Eh? Even so it still never really looked like a knight at all to me. Especially with things like Colosseum and XD giving us a clearer view of it which made it look even less like a Knight.

It's mostly the hair. The way it goes down the center of the face, and how it's low enough to emulate a brow line like you see in some cartoons.
Remember that the front part is in the same shape as Gallade's hair, which is more obviously supposed to resemble a helmet.

Maybe but they took away the lower bits, added a fin, and the dress still looks nothing like a Knight, especially with the weird red fin/horn thing.
Maybe they just quickly recognized the design failure and that's why they made Gallade?

I don't think Gallade was intended as a retcon. It's just a non feminine Gardevoir. They never stopped mentioning Gardevoir's protectiveness, so it seems like they still considered it an important part of Gardevoir's design.
