Gen 2 is by design supposed to be a low-stakes adventure during the Johoto part and then the Kanto postgame opens up where it floods you with nostalgia feels and higher challenge.
It's basically begging for the LGPE treatment.

I don't want that fucking garbage anymore than the next person. They could make it a 1:1 remake of the original games and just call it "Go Johto" and I STILL wouldn't buy it just on principle alone.

It's an okay game but it's only good because of the game's context setting.
